## Free fax line: what you can get for $0
An online fax line is a number plus a service that handles its documents. You do not need a physical telephone line to receive a PDF. Free sending allowances, temporary private receiving, public inboxes and billing trials have different limits.
Fax.Plus offers starter sending pages. SingleFax gives you a private number for 24 hours with no card, and FaxBurner also offers a disposable number. GotFreeFax's receiving queue is public. eFax and MetroFax offer limited trials with paid continuation. Choose by direction and duration before calling an offer a free fax line.

### Is there a free fax line?
There are capped sending allowances, temporary receiving numbers, public shared inboxes and trials. Do not assume that a permanent private receiving line is included for $0. Compare [temporary fax numbers](https://singlefax.com/temporary-fax-number) when you need a later reply.
### What's the difference between a fax line and a fax number?
The number is the destination a sender dials. An online service handles transmission and PDF delivery without a physical phone line at your desk. Read [what a fax number is](https://singlefax.com/blog/what-is-a-fax-number).
## What “free” means before you start
### Free sending and free receiving are different
A sending tool can deliver your PDF to someone else's fax number without assigning you a number. If the recipient must fax something back, you need a separate receiving arrangement. Your email address or cellular phone number does not automatically become a fax number.
A receiving service does the opposite: it gives you a number and an inbox or download path. A free number may expire after a day and may have a quota for incoming pages. That does not imply free outgoing transmissions or unlimited use.
Write down both sides of the exchange. A one-way three-page submission may fit an outbound quota. A request that requires an agency response next week needs a return number active next week, even if today's outgoing fax is free.
### A starter allowance is not a monthly plan
Ten pages total means ten across the account's starter use, not ten per month or ten per fax forever. Once used, that allowance is exhausted unless the provider's rules explicitly add more. The same distinction applies to five startup pages and pages earned by completing tasks.
Count the actual document, including pages already merged into the PDF. A provider-generated cover may be outside the cap, while your own uploaded cover may be inside it. Read that provider's rule rather than assuming all fax services count identically.
### A trial is a billing arrangement
A trial can be useful, but it belongs in a separate category. It may require a card, convert to a subscription and charge weekly, monthly or annually. The amount due after the trial and its cancellation deadline matter more than the word “free” on the download button.
If you choose one, save the offer, renewal date and cancellation confirmation. Uninstalling an app does not cancel its subscription. Apple, Google Play and website purchases may have different cancellation paths. See the fax app comparison for examples of store catalogs and recurring offers.
## 1. FaxZero: small outgoing faxes without a subscription
FaxZero's free option can fit an ordinary small submission. Its official FAQ describes a three-document-page cap plus the service's cover and a maximum of five free faxes per day. The generated free cover carries FaxZero's logo and slogan; that cover does not consume the three-document-page limit.
A valid email address is required. After submitting, you must follow the confirmation link before the free fax transmits. Check spam filtering and keep the private status URL. An upload or the initial button press alone is not evidence that the document reached its recipient.
This can work well when your recipient accepts the cover and the entire packet fits. It is less suitable when an agency requires its own barcode sheet to be page one. Check the provider's cover behavior before placing another sheet in front of official routing material.
The FaxZero review explains its paid alternative and privacy distinctions. A branded free cover is not a reason by itself to buy another service if the recipient accepts it. Equally, a free quota is not proof that the service has the agreement your organization requires for PHI.
## 2. Dropbox Fax: startup and earned sending pages
Dropbox's official help page gives a new Dropbox Fax account five free outgoing pages. It lists tasks through which eligible users can earn up to twenty more, reaching twenty-five total. Treat earned pages as conditional rather than promising every signup the larger quota immediately.
Those are startup and earned pages, not a fresh monthly allowance. Free incoming faxing is not included. If you need a continuing receiving number, compare the paid plans separately and check whether the account's workflow fits the expected reply.
It can be a useful choice for someone already working with cloud documents who has enough remaining pages. The page-count rule and actual destination should be checked before consuming the allowance. Do not create repeated accounts or assume there is no limit merely because signup is available.

## 3. FaxBurner: a tiny send quota and immediate receiving
FaxBurner's free package combines five sending pages **total** with 25 incoming pages per month and a disposable number lasting 24 hours. Those limits answer different questions: remaining outgoing capacity, incoming allowance and how long the actual number works.
A free number can be helpful when another person is ready to fax you now. It is a poor fit when an office may reply several days later. Giving a short-lived number on a form does not make that number remain active until the form is processed.
The native app described by the checked FAQ is for iPhone and iPad; Android users are directed to email sending. Native Android app availability should not be inferred from that email support. The FAQ also says the service is not currently HIPAA compliant.
See the FaxBurner review for paid packages, cancellation and destination caveats. The free tier may be enough for your immediate task. A continuing number and repeated use are separate reasons to consider a paid plan, rather than paying simply because the quota is small.
## 4. Fax.Plus: ten starter outbound pages
Fax.Plus's pricing page provides ten outbound pages on its free plan, without a receiving number. That can fit a larger first packet than a three-page option, subject to the destination and the service's counting rules. The allowance is total, not monthly.
Check whether destination rates consume more than one allowance page for each document page. A nominal ten-page balance should not be treated as a guarantee that any ten-page international fax is free. Check the final use or quote for your specific recipient.
The service has mobile apps and a web account. If you later need ongoing receiving, its paid plans have separate monthly allowances, per-fax caps and overage. Those are different from the starter free sending quota.
The Fax.Plus review explains paid plans and BAA eligibility. Enterprise is the verified HIPAA-with-BAA path; the ordinary free account is not a substitute for that product. For a qualifying ordinary starter task, however, paying another provider may be unnecessary.
## 5. SingleFax: free receiving, paid outgoing
SingleFax's genuinely free product is a [US local receiving number for 24 hours](https://singlefax.com/free-fax-number), with verified email and no card to start. It is assigned to your account for that active window rather than published as an open shared inbox.
The free pool is **25 incoming pages per rolling 30 days across your free claims**. There is one active free number at a time and a maximum of three free claims per rolling 30 days. Getting another eligible free claim does not reset the shared incoming-page pool.
Extra received faxes can be held for paid viewing. The free quota therefore does not mean every arriving document is freely downloadable regardless of volume. Check the page count and price before unlocking a held document.
After expiry, the three-day recovery window offers a way to keep the same number; it is not three additional days of free active receiving. A $4.99 thirty-day option includes the first received fax, with additional receiving paid separately. Standard is $7.90 monthly or $79 annually with 300 pooled pages, subject to destination terms.
Outgoing SingleFax faxes are **not free**. Ordinary one-time sending starts at $0.99. The free number is also not a HIPAA receiving product: organizations handling PHI should use an approved [HIPAA arrangement](https://singlefax.com/hipaa-fax) instead.
## 6. A library or authorized workplace
Some public libraries offer genuinely free faxing. Seattle Public Library's current equipment page lists free outbound faxing to the US and Canada and says it cannot receive faxes for patrons. Saint Paul Public Library lists faxing at no charge. These are local examples, not a nationwide library policy.
Call your branch about equipment, destination limits, hours, assistance and whether a library card or appointment is required. Ask about the complete packet rather than only the first page. Some branches charge or do not provide faxing at all.
A workplace machine may also be available, but use it only with permission and within your employer's rules. Employer-paid equipment is not permission to send personal or regulated documents through any available machine. Confirm who can see the output, transmission logs or stored files.

## 7. Doximity DocFax for eligible clinicians
Doximity markets DocFax as a free HIPAA-compliant clinician fax service with a dedicated number, document handling and mobile access. Its public product page lists eligible US licensed physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants and pharmacists. Professional verification is required; this is not a general-public free signup alternative.
Doximity publishes a [Business Associate Agreement](https://www.doximity.com/baa) and says individual users enter a BAA on registration, with institutional agreements through enterprise solutions. The agreement's scope and the clinician's organizational obligations still matter. A free service can carry a BAA, so a paid competitor is not automatically the better healthcare choice.
The public marketing page advertises unlimited pages, but account rules and approved use remain applicable. We have not treated that headline as permission for unrestricted bulk sending or every possible destination. Verify the actual account's eligibility, limits and organizational approval.
For an eligible clinician whose approved workflow fits, DocFax may be the most economical choice. For patients, non-US professionals or people outside eligibility, it is not an available substitute merely because the service is free. Compare verified BAA services when your organization needs another path.
## Match a free option to your complete packet
Start by counting the final file. Include attachments, signature pages and required routing or barcode sheets. A page missing from the scan will not appear at the recipient just because the cover says it is present. Check orientation, small text and handwritten dates before upload.
Next, verify the number with the recipient or the authoritative instructions. A fax service cannot determine which department should receive a government submission merely from the form name. If an official letter specifies a fax line or barcode cover, follow that instruction.
Then match the allowance to the destination and task. A four-page packet might exceed FaxZero's three-document-page quota while fitting another starter allowance. That is a reason to compare the actual remaining balances, not a reason to claim every packet above three pages must be paid.
Finally, arrange any return number before sending a request that needs a response. Confirm its expiry and receiving capacity. Put a working callback contact on a [cover sheet](https://singlefax.com/fax-cover-sheet), keeping sensitive detail in the approved document rather than exposed on the cover.
## When paying $0.99 is better than free
An ordinary one-time send can be practical when free quotas are exhausted, required cover branding does not fit, or you want a complete paid packet without retaining a subscription. It can also be easier than arranging a trip to a branch that has limited equipment hours.
SingleFax starts at **$0.99 for up to ten document pages**. Failed delivery costs $0. Longer packets add $0.08 per document page up to 100.
For example, twelve document pages cost $0.99 + two extra pages at $0.08 = **$1.15**. An optional cover created in the composer is excluded from billed document pages; a cover already merged into your uploaded PDF is part of that document.
That does not mean a paid fax is always preferable. If a genuine free quota, local library or eligible clinician service covers the whole task, $0 remains cheaper. If you need a continuing inbox or recurring volume, a subscription may offer useful value beyond a one-time transmission.
For organizational PHI, the ordinary $0.99 route is not the recommendation.
