# How to Fax Social Security (SSA) in 2026

UpdatedOct 10, 2026 [![Mircea Rilă](https://singlefax.com/images/authors/mircea-rila.jpg)Mircea Rilă](https://singlefax.com/authors/mircea-rila)

**There is no single national Social Security fax number for every submission.** For requested disability records, use the number on your SSA or DDS Electronic Records Express letter and put its barcode page first. For other tasks, use your local office's official instructions or an eligible online submission route.

$0.99 covers up to 10 pages, pay only if delivered.

![Social Security Fax Number: How to Find Yours](https://singlefax.com/images/versioned/559263f326ced121/how-to-fax-social-security-ssa-2026.jpg)

There is no national Social Security fax number for every submission. Use the fax number on your SSA or DDS request letter, or find your local office in the [official SSA locator](https://www.ssa.gov/locator) and follow its current instructions.

The [IRS fax numbers](https://singlefax.com/blog/irs-fax-numbers-2026) directory covers a separate agency. For Social Security, use the SSA letter or local office route explained here.

The official SSA sources below were checked on **8 October 2026**. For general transmission steps, see [how to send a fax](https://singlefax.com/blog/how-to-send-a-fax). **Have the number from your letter? [Enter it here and send](https://singlefax.com/send-or-receive-fax?type=send).** This guide deliberately does not prefill a national destination.

## Choose the route for your document

| Situation | Where to get the destination | What goes first or how to submit |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Requested disability health, school or related evidence | Fax number on the SSA/DDS eRE request letter | The correct barcode request letter is page one |
| Specific paperwork requested by a local office | That office's current instructions or official locator contact | Follow the office's packet instructions |
| Eligible personal forms and documents | Upload Documents inside my Social Security | Use the available form or document upload route |
| Original or certified documents | Follow SSA's mail or in-person instructions | SSA says it cannot accept those electronically |

Electronic Records Express is for requested records related to a disability claim. It is not a general national inbox for every Social Security question, card application or benefit form. The [eRE overview](https://www.ssa.gov/ere/) describes the program and who can submit records.

The [SSA Field Office Locator](https://www.ssa.gov/locator) is the official local directory. Its contact layout supports a Fax field when an office publishes one. A local office's number does not automatically become the right destination for evidence addressed to DDS or a hearing office.

## How to find your local SSA fax number

1. Open the [official SSA field office locator](https://www.ssa.gov/locator).
2. Search by address, city, state or ZIP code.
3. Open the relevant office’s information and check its service scope.
4. Find its published **Fax** contact, or call the office through its official contact route to confirm where your document belongs.
5. Compare that route with any case-specific instructions on your request letter before sending.

Check the office's scope too. A Card Center or express card location may not handle benefit applications or appeals. A number belonging to an SSA location is not proof that the office can accept your particular packet.

If the locator does not load or does not show a fax for the office, contact SSA through its published contact route and ask for the correct submission method. An application error is not a reason to choose a number from an unverified state-by-state blog list.

When you already have a request letter, compare it with the office or unit handling the case. Do not replace a case-specific fax destination with a local number just because the local office is closer. Different units can handle different parts of a claim.

### How to read the fax number on your SSA letter

Look for the requested submission method and the fax number beside that instruction. Identify the case-specific barcode page and any instructions about the order of records. Keep those directions with the packet while preparing the scan.

![Illustration of a request letter with the fax destination, case identifiers and barcode redacted; the barcode page must remain first in the real packet.](https://singlefax.com/images/guides/ssa-request-letter-redacted.svg)

**This is a routing illustration, not an SSA letter or a usable barcode.** In your actual packet, retain the original readable barcode and required case details. Redacting the real barcode before submitting would remove the routing information SSA needs.

If you lost the request or barcode, contact the DDS or hearing office handling the claim and ask for the correct page. Do not draw a replacement barcode or move a different claimant's barcode onto the packet. The [eRE FAQ](https://www.ssa.gov/ere/faq.htm) explains case and document association.

## How to fax disability records through Electronic Records Express

SSA's eRE FAQ says you do not need to register to send by fax. The required request letter and its barcode are the key to routing. Registration applies to the restricted website, which is a different submission channel.

### 1. Keep the complete request and authorization

Review what SSA or DDS asked for, which claimant and provider records are involved, and the requested time period. The eRE FAQ describes Form SSA-827 accompanying requests for health and school records. Keep the relevant request and authorization with your working packet.

Confirm that you are supplying the requested records and have authority to disclose them. Avoid including unrelated patients' documents or extra pages simply because they were in the same scan folder.

### 2. Verify the destination on the request

Use the fax number on that letter. Check every digit and the correct case or office before sending. Do not reuse a previous claimant's destination or substitute the voice contact number.

If a letter conflicts with newer case-specific instructions, ask the handling office to confirm the route. A third-party directory cannot resolve that conflict. Keep the confirmed instructions for your records.

### 3. Put the barcode request letter first

The eRE FAQ says the request letter must be the first fax page because its barcode links the records to the applicant's disability folder. Do not insert your own marketing or generic cover ahead of it.

For separate provider documents, SSA's PC fax example puts the appropriate barcode first for each document. Keep the requested document boundaries and case association intact. If you are unsure how to combine records, ask the handling office before merging them.

### 4. Check readability and limits

Inspect the complete scan: barcode, page edges, dates, signatures and record order. Keep the barcode readable and uncropped. A high-quality source is helpful; the FAQ does not establish a universal minimum scan DPI for every online service.

SSA says not to fax more than **200 pages** through eRE. That agency limit still applies even though **SingleFax supports up to 1000 total pages per order**. An uploaded barcode request page is part of the document packet and counts toward that limit.

If the packet exceeds the sending service's limit, follow the office's instructions for separate documents or use the registered eRE website. Its **50 MB submission limit** is separate from the fax page limit. Keep the proper barcode first for each submitted document where required.

### 5. Choose the appropriate sending workflow

A patient acting only for themselves has a different service relationship from a clinic or business associate handling PHI for an organization. Covered entities and business associates should use [HIPAA Secure on the web](https://singlefax.com/hipaa-fax), with an active organization BAA before uploading PHI.

The ordinary guest sender, email gateway, WhatsApp gateway, Chrome extension, MCP and public API are separate from that protected workflow. A confidentiality cover does not change which channel you used. Review the [compliance overview](https://singlefax.com/hipaa-compliance) for the agreement and safeguards.

### 6. Keep the final transmission result

Wait for the final fax result and match the destination and pages to your packet. A successful report records transmission to the endpoint, rather than a decision on the disability claim or proof that staff have completed processing.

Keep the exact sent document, request instructions and confirmation together. If delivery is incomplete, some pages may already have arrived. Ask the recipient whether it needs a complete resend or only the missing portion, preserving the required barcode ordering.

## Uploading to SSA instead of faxing

There are two distinct online routes in this guide. **The eRE website** is a registered channel for requested disability records. **Upload Documents in my Social Security** is a route for certain personal forms and documents.

SSA's [electronic submission FAQ](https://www.ssa.gov/faqs/en/questions/KA-10120.html), dated 17 February 2026, says users can locate available items through **Search Forms** or **Upload Your Documents** inside that application. Some form and document types are unavailable. SSA cannot accept original or certified copies electronically.

Do not assume a successful upload of one document type means another is permitted. Use the controls and instructions for the actual form. If SSA asks for an original, follow its mail or in-person procedure rather than sending a scan and calling it an original.

The eRE options are free on SSA's side. A commercial fax service can still charge for its own transmission. The government submission channel and the fax provider's sending fee are different costs.

## Is it okay to fax a Social Security number?

Include an SSN when the official form or handling office requires it for the task, and verify the direct destination. Avoid a full SSN in an unnecessary cover heading, email subject, chat message or public support request. Use the minimum information needed for the specified routing and submission.

A generic confidentiality notice does not correct a wrong number. Check attachments for unrelated pages and keep a copy securely. A successfully delivered fax to an incorrect endpoint can still be a disclosure problem.

If you are a covered entity or business associate sending medical evidence, choose the appropriate protected service and required agreement. SSA's discussion of eRE privacy does not automatically establish a separate commercial fax provider's BAA relationship. See [HIPAA fax questions](https://singlefax.com/blog/hipaa-fax-myths-vs-facts-2026) and the [HIPAA Secure service](https://singlefax.com/hipaa-fax).

## Cost and confirmation when using SingleFax

Ordinary sending starts at **$0.99 for up to ten document pages**, with about **$0.08 per extra page** and **$0 on failed delivery**.

For an organization using HIPAA Secure, one-time tiers start at **$6.50 for 1–10 document pages** or **$10 for 11–100; above 100 pages add $0.08/page, up to 1,000 total pages**, plus any displayed destination adjustment. An active organization BAA is required before upload. Review the destination's billing terms; a blanket failure guarantee does not apply to every route.

Do not put a generated cover before an eRE barcode request letter. If the instructions require that letter first, upload the packet in that order and avoid adding a separate cover ahead of it. Check the final preview and document count before checkout.

An outgoing fax does not include your own receiving number. Do not buy a temporary number merely because a form has a fax field; use it only if the office needs to fax you back and the number will remain active for that reply. A short-lived number can expire before an agency response arrives.

The [pricing page](https://singlefax.com/pricing) has full product terms. Keep the final transmission result and follow the handling office's acknowledgement or processing instructions. SingleFax provides transmission; it does not act as SSA, DDS or your claimant representative.

**Have the verified number from your letter? [Enter it here and send](https://singlefax.com/send-or-receive-fax?type=send).** For organization PHI, [start HIPAA Secure](https://singlefax.com/send-or-receive-fax?hipaa=1) instead.

## Related submission guides

Use the [government forms guide](https://singlefax.com/blog/government-irs-state-forms-2026) for other agencies, the [IRS number directory](https://singlefax.com/blog/irs-fax-numbers-2026) for IRS-specific routing, or [healthcare faxing](https://singlefax.com/blog/healthcare-faxing-2026) for clinical exchanges. An IRS form number and an SSA case letter belong to different submission systems; never interchange their fax destinations.

## Frequently asked questions

What is the Social Security fax number?

The fax number for Social Security depends on the office or request; there is no single national SSA fax number for every submission. For disability records requested through Electronic Records Express, use the number on your request letter. For a local office, use the fax it publishes in the official SSA locator or current instructions. Do not substitute a third-party directory number.

Can I fax documents to Social Security?

Yes when SSA or DDS provides a fax route for your document. Electronic Records Express accepts requested disability health and school records by fax, with its barcode request letter as the first page. For other paperwork, follow your office's or form's current instructions.

How do I send documents to SSA?

Choose the route for the task. Requested disability evidence can use eRE fax or its registered website. A local office can give specific submission instructions. Certain personal forms and documents can use Upload Documents in my Social Security; originals and certified copies cannot be accepted electronically.

Do I register before faxing eRE records?

SSA's eRE FAQ says no registration is needed for faxing. Use the number on the request letter and put that barcode letter first. Registration is a separate requirement for the restricted eRE website.

Why must the barcode letter be page one?

It helps associate the records with the applicant's disability folder and any applicable provider payment. SSA warns that omitting it can delay association. For separate provider documents, each document starts with the appropriate SSA or DDS barcode.

How many pages can I fax to SSA?

SSA's eRE FAQ says not to fax more than 200 pages. SingleFax supports up to 1000 total pages per order, but the SSA limit still applies. Its eRE website has a separate 50 MB submission limit. Follow case-specific instructions for splitting or changing channels.

Is it okay to fax a Social Security number?

Include it only when the official form or recipient requires it for your task. Verify the direct fax destination and use appropriate safeguards. Do not put a full SSN in an unnecessary cover heading, email subject or public message. A correct recipient and submission channel matter more than a generic confidentiality footer.

Can I upload documents instead of faxing?

Sometimes. SSA lists certain forms and documents in Upload Documents within my Social Security. Some types are unavailable, and originals or certified copies cannot be accepted electronically. The disability eRE website is a different registered channel.

Can I fax an application for a Social Security card to a national number?

Do not use a made-up national fax number. Follow the card application instructions and the relevant SSA office or Card Center process. The locator identifies card-service locations; fax availability for another task does not establish acceptance of a card application.

Should a clinic use HIPAA Secure when sending medical evidence?

Covered entities and business associates should use the appropriate protected workflow and required agreement when a provider handles PHI on their behalf. SingleFax's HIPAA Secure web route requires an active organization BAA before upload. Its ordinary email and WhatsApp gateways are separate workflows.
