# How to Fax a US Number From Abroad (2026 Guide)

## Why International → US Faxing Still Matters

Even in 2026, many US institutions continue to accept or request fax for specific workflows. For non-US senders, fax can avoid international post while preserving a transmission report. The challenge is dialing correctly and producing a document that faxes clearly in the US system.

## The Basics: Exit Code → Country Code → Area Code → Number

To fax a US destination, you compose the number like this:

1. Your country’s exit code (the prefix to dial out of your country)
2. US country code: 1
3. US area code (3 digits)
4. US local number (7 digits)

So the pattern is: EXIT + 1 + AAA + NXX‑XXXX

### Common access prefixes

- UK and much of Europe: `00`
- Australia: `0011`
- Japan: `010`
- US and Canada when calling another country: `011`
- Other countries: check the local carrier; Mexico, Brazil, and many others do not use a universal `011` pattern

## Examples with a Sample US Number

Assume the US destination is (212) 555‑0199.

- From UK: 00 1 212 555 0199
- From Germany/France/Spain/Italy: 00 1 212 555 0199
- From Canada: 1 212 555 0199
- From Australia: 0011 1 212 555 0199
- From Japan: 010 1 212 555 0199

For Mexico, Brazil, and other countries, use `+1 212 555 0199` when supported or confirm the carrier-specific prefix.

## Timing: When to Send

Most fax systems can receive outside business hours. If staff must act promptly, send during the recipient’s US business hours:

- US Eastern (ET): 9:00–17:00 → UTC−5 (UTC−4 DST)
- US Central (CT): 9:00–17:00 → UTC−6 (UTC−5 DST)
- US Mountain (MT): 9:00–17:00 → UTC−7 (UTC−6 DST; most of Arizona does not observe DST)

Hawaii and most of Arizona follow different daylight-saving patterns. Confirm the recipient’s local time rather than relying only on these offsets.

## Produce a Clear, US‑Friendly Fax

Fax compresses and rasterizes pages. Start with a strong source to preserve legibility:

- Prefer PDF (export from Docs/Word/Sheets/Slides)
- If photographing papers: bright lighting, avoid shadows, crop edges, boost contrast
- Avoid tiny text; aim for 11–12pt minimum
- Use bold signatures; dark ink only
- Combine multi‑page documents into one PDF to preserve order

Put only the routing details the recipient needs on the cover.

- Recipient name/department and fax number
