What You Cannot Fax to the IRS in 2026

5 min read

Form 9465, Form W-7, Form 4506, Form 1040, new USCIS filings, EOIR, VA 21-526EZ, and USPTO trademarks after 1 July 2026 are not national fax filings. Form 4506-T still faxes. Form 8857 instructions conflict with the March 2026 mail chart.

Some forms look faxable because an old PDF, a forum, or a local office number is still circulating. Example: someone finds a fax number on an old innocent-spouse instruction page and treats it as the place to send Form 8857. The March 2026 where-to-file chart for that form is mail. This page is the short list of filings that do not have a national fax intake we will send. Re-checked 2 October 2026.

Do not fax these as a national filing

  • Form 9465 (installment agreement) is online, by phone, or by mail.
  • Form W-7 (ITIN) is mail or in person. It is not a national fax filing.
  • Form 4506 (copy of the return) is mail. The faxable transcript request is Form 4506-T.
  • Form 1040 and the other standard annual returns are e-file or mail. There is no public 1040 fax number.
  • USCIS new filings are not sent to an IRS fax line.
  • EOIR (immigration court) is not an IRS fax destination.
  • VA Form 21-526EZ is a veterans claim. Do not use a local VA or MAC number as if it were a national IRS filing line.
  • USPTO trademarks after 1 July 2026 are not a fax filing for this product.

Form 8857

Innocent-spouse relief has a live IRS page and an instruction fax line that does not match the March 2026 mail chart. Use the live About Form 8857 page. Do not pick a fax number from memory or from an older instruction PDF.

What you can still fax

Transcripts: Form 4506-T by fax. A foreign bank that wants proof you were a US resident uses Form 8802. The letter the IRS issues later is Form 6166. Anything else that is a real PDF to a number you already verified: generic send.
