IRS fax number for 1040
Form 1040, 1040-SR, and 1040-NR cannot be filed by fax. Standard corporate returns, such as Form 1120, 1120-S, and 1065, also require e-file or mail unless the IRS explicitly requests a fax for an open case.
How to file Form 1040:
- E-file through IRS Free File or authorized software when you qualify.
- Mail a signed paper return to the address listed on Where to file paper tax returns.
The only exception is narrow. If an assigned IRS revenue agent, appeals officer, or written notice instructs you to fax documents, use the case-specific number on that letter. Do not reuse a number for Form 2553 or Form 2848 for a 1040.

Online fax to the IRS
An online fax reaches the IRS the same way as a machine fax. What matters is:
- The correct unit number from the live IRS page for that form.
- A signature accepted by the form instructions. Form 2848 submitted by fax or mail still requires a handwritten signature. Electronic signatures for 2848 are only accepted through the IRS online portal.
- A complete packet. Missing pages are not received just because a cover sheet arrived.
- A delivery receipt for your records. The receipt shows the fax network reported delivery. It is not an IRS acceptance letter.
When sending a form SingleFax routes directly, you can use the product page: EIN, 2553, 2848, 4506-T, 5472, or 7004. For any other allowed destination, use send a fax and enter the number from IRS.gov.
What not to do
- Do not fax Form 1040 to numbers published for EIN, CAF, RAIVS, or Form 2553.
- Do not rely on a blog, video comment, or software screenshot for an IRS fax number.
- Do not put a Social Security number on the cover sheet if the form already includes it on page 1.
If you need to file Form 1040, submit it electronically or mail it to the designated processing center.
